The “Old Country”, south of the Elbe, near Hamburg in Germany, is one of the largest fruit-growing regions in Europe. In Jork, on their 40 hectares of apple orchards, the Zum Felde family abandoned traditional cultivation methods in 1996. “Even though we produce organic, we do not give up plant protection,” says Heinrich Zum Felde. Among the products he uses, there is one that deserves attention.

“I have been using azadirachtin for seven years and it has allowed me to definitively stem the invasion of ash aphids from the apple tree,” the arborist said. A solution from Asia. “Azadirachtin prevents the production of a hormone that allows insects to moult. The active ingredient is extracted from the seeds of Neem, a tree whose properties have been used in India for over two thousand years in agriculture and medicine.”

In forestry, Neem is also well known in Canada. Neem potential was assessed in jack pine plantations, white pine plantations, pine plantations, seed orchards, black spruce and white spruce plantations, western cedar plantations (Ontario) and stands of balsam fir in Newfoundland.

Result : Neem seed extract containing azadirachtin was very effective against defoliating larvae of 13 lepidopteran and sawfly (hymenopteran) species.

About Neem

In Brazil, all fruit and vegetable producers, as well as agricultural product distributors, are familiar with Neem, a commonly used product since 2001, especially for animals and agriculture.

The Organic Alternative

Azadirachtin-A, naturally present in Neem, effectively fights against a large number of pests. Over the last 25 years, entomologists have isolated more than 400 different species…

At maturity, the Neem tree can produce up to 50kg of fruit, which is equivalent to 30kg of seeds; these seeds are the main source of insecticidal compounds, including azadirachtin. However, the quantity of azadirachtin in the seeds varies considerably depending on climatic conditions, soil conditions, and the tree’s genotype (Ermel 1986; Singh 1986).
